THE KILLING OF PATRICE LUMUMBA

STATUSConfirmed. Belgium accepted moral responsibility

THE CLAIM

That the United States and Belgium both sought the death of the Congo's first elected prime minister, and that Belgium was directly implicated in the killing that occurred.

THE THEORY, AS ITS PROPONENTS TELL IT

Two separate plots ran against the same man, and the documented record establishes both.

The Church Committee found that the CIA had been instructed at the highest level to assassinate Lumumba, and that a scientist, later identified as Sidney Gottlieb, delivered a lethal biological agent to the station chief in Léopoldville with instructions to use it. The station chief did not carry it out, and the poison was eventually disposed of.

Lumumba was instead handed to Katangan secessionist authorities, transported under Belgian escort, beaten, and shot by a firing squad commanded by a Belgian officer. His body was dissolved in acid by Belgian police officers, one of whom later described it publicly and produced a tooth he had kept.

The Belgian parliamentary commission of 2001 examined the whole sequence and concluded that Belgian ministers bore moral responsibility. The government apologised in 2002. Belgium returned the tooth to Lumumba's family in 2022.

WHAT IS KNOWN

The Church Committee's findings on the CIA authorisation and the poison are public and detailed.

The Belgian commission's report is public, and the apology was formal and official.

The killing itself was carried out by Katangan forces with Belgian officers present and in command of the firing party, which the commission established.

Documents released later, including a 2013 letter from a former British peer, have raised MI6 involvement as a possibility. That element remains unconfirmed.

EVIDENCE FOR

  • Church Committee findings that assassination was authorised and that a lethal agent was delivered to the CIA station.
  • A Belgian parliamentary commission finding moral responsibility, and a formal state apology.
  • First-person accounts from the Belgian police officers who disposed of the body.
  • The physical return of Lumumba's tooth by the Belgian state in 2022.

EVIDENCE AGAINST (THE SIMPLIFIED VERSION)

  • The CIA plot was authorised but not executed. Attributing the killing to the CIA specifically overstates what the record shows, and the record is damning enough without it.
  • Congolese actors, including Mobutu and the Katangan authorities, had their own motives and made their own decisions.
  • The alleged MI6 role rests on a single second-hand account and is not established.

ASSESSMENT

Confirmed, and unusual in this cabinet for having a government formally apologise. Two Western states set out to remove an elected leader; one authorised poison that was never used, and the other supplied the officers who commanded the firing squad and dissolved the body afterwards. Precision matters here because the popular version, that the CIA killed Lumumba, is both wrong and unnecessary. The documented version is worse.

WHAT WOULD CHANGE THE GRADE

  • CONFIRMED on two tracks: the Church Committee established that CIA assassination was authorised at presidential level and a lethal agent delivered to the station, and a Belgian parliamentary commission found Belgian ministers morally responsible, followed by a formal state apology.
  • Overstated in the popular version: the CIA plot was authorised and not executed. Belgian-commanded Katangan forces carried out the killing, and Belgian police dissolved the body.
  • Unresolved: an alleged MI6 role, which rests on a single second-hand account from 2013 and has never been substantiated.
