A copper scroll in the CIA's own courtyard. Three sections fell to the NSA and an amateur within a decade. The fourth has survived thirty-six years and four public clues.
THE SOLWAY FIRTH SPACEMAN
Kodak confirmed the negative was untouched. The photographer swore the marsh was empty. The likeliest answer is his wife in a pale dress, and he rejected it for forty-seven years.
SKINWALKER RANCH
A research institute worked this property for eight years and a Defense Intelligence Agency contract covered it. Between them they have released nothing anyone else can check.
THE MARFA LIGHTS
A student physics club triangulated the lights to traffic on a highway nine miles off, refracted by a temperature inversion. The famous 1883 cowboy sighting was written down much later.
THE KECKSBURG INCIDENT
The Air Force searched and found nothing. Under court order, NASA said it had analysed fragments, and had lost the records. A judge called the search inadequate.
THE VALENTICH DISAPPEARANCE
Six minutes of a young pilot describing something above his Cessna to air traffic control, then seventeen seconds of metallic scraping. No wreckage was ever confirmed.

Vela 6911 had correctly called forty-one detonations. On the forty-second, a White House panel decided the instrument was probably wrong. Arecibo and the Naval Research Lab disagreed.

The meeting is real, the secrecy is real, and American intelligence helped fund the early years. Seventy-two years of it have produced no record of a single decision, and no accountability either.

Seventy-six people died, twenty-five of them children. The FBI said no pyrotechnic rounds were fired. Six years later, after evidence surfaced, it conceded that some had been.
RUBY RIDGE
The FBI's own rules of engagement for the standoff authorised shooting armed adults on sight. A Senate subcommittee later found them unconstitutional. Vicki Weaver was shot in the doorway.
THE OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING
McVeigh's guilt is not in doubt. What has never been resolved is how many people were involved, and why the FBI withheld thousands of documents until days before the execution.

230 dead off Long Island. Witnesses described a streak rising to the aircraft. Four years of reconstruction found a centre fuel tank explosion, and no missile damage on any part.

Nixon's instruction to make the economy scream is in Richard Helms's contemporaneous notes. The Church Committee documented the funding, the propaganda and an earlier coup attempt that killed the army commander.
THE LETELIER ASSASSINATION
A bomb under the driver's seat, fourteen blocks from the White House. It killed Orlando Letelier and a 25-year-old American colleague. Convictions followed, and Chile later indicted its own former intelligence chief.
STUXNET
It spun the centrifuges to destruction while reporting normal readings to the operators. Nobody has claimed it. Everybody knows.
ECHELON
Denied for decades as conspiracy theory. In 2001 a European Parliament committee concluded the system existed, and advised European citizens to encrypt their email.

The Skripals survived. Dawn Sturgess, who had nothing to do with any of it, was given the discarded bottle as a gift months later and died. Two suspects were identified by flight records and CCTV.

Chisso discharged methylmercury for thirty-six years. Its own physician reproduced the disease in cats in 1959 using factory effluent. The company shut the experiment down and kept discharging for nine more years.

Thousands died within days. Every safety system at the plant was disabled, inoperative or undersized. The chairman was arrested, released on bail, and never returned.
LOVE CANAL
Hooker Chemical sold the site for a dollar with a deed clause disclaiming liability and describing the waste. The school board built a school on it. Twenty-five years later the chemicals came up through the ground.
THE FLINT WATER CRISIS
Officials told residents the water was safe while a state employee's own emails described it otherwise. A pediatrician's blood-lead data forced the reversal.
AGENT ORANGE
Internal industry correspondence from 1965 discussed the dioxin contaminant and the desire to avoid regulatory attention. Veterans litigated for decades; Vietnamese claimants have never succeeded.
VIOXX
Merck's own VIGOR trial showed elevated cardiovascular risk in 2000. The published paper omitted three heart attacks. The drug stayed on the market for four more years.
THE GM IGNITION SWITCH
A knee or a heavy keyring could knock the ignition out of run. The engine stopped, the airbags disarmed. An engineer redesigned the part in 2006 and did not change its number.
ENRON
Special purpose entities held the losses off the balance sheet. When it collapsed, Arthur Andersen destroyed documents, and an eighty-nine-year-old accounting firm ceased to exist.
CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA
A personality app collected not just its users' data but their friends' too, under Facebook's own rules at the time. Facebook was fined and settled; the firm dissolved.
THE MURDER OF OLOF PALME
The murder weapon was never found. The investigation grew to over 130 metres of files. In 2020 the prosecutor named a man who had died in 2000 and closed the case.
KAREN SILKWOOD
Her apartment was contaminated with plutonium from a sealed facility. Days later she died driving to meet a New York Times reporter. The documents she said she was carrying were not found.
INSLAW AND PROMIS
A bankruptcy court found the Justice Department took the software through trickery, fraud and deceit. The finding was vacated on jurisdictional grounds, never on the facts.
THE ALCATRAZ ESCAPE
They dug through the walls with sharpened spoons, left dummy heads in their beds, and launched a raincoat raft into the bay. The FBI closed the case in 1979. The Marshals Service has not.
THE AMBER ROOM
Dismantled in thirty-six hours and shipped to Königsberg. The city burned in 1944 and fell in 1945. Whether the room burned with it is the entire question.
THE ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM
Sponge divers found a corroded lump in a shipwreck. It contains at least thirty bronze gears and predicts eclipses. Nothing of comparable complexity appears again for over a millennium.

Three laboratories dated it to 1260 to 1390. Critics say the sample came from a medieval repair. The image formation mechanism has never been reproduced.
THE CLEVELAND TORSO MURDERS
Twelve official victims, only two ever named. The city's safety director, Eliot Ness, responded by burning the shantytown where the victims had lived.

No DNA from any defendant was found at the scene. They were released in 2011 by an Alford plea, which let them maintain innocence while pleading guilty, and let the state avoid a retrial.

Around a million bitcoin sits in early-mined addresses, untouched for over fifteen years. Moving one satoshi of it, or signing one message, would settle the question in seconds. Nobody has.

THE MANTELL INCIDENT
Thomas Mantell climbed after an object without oxygen equipment, blacked out, and his aircraft broke up. The object was almost certainly a Skyhook balloon, then classified.

THE DEAD INTERNET THEORY
It began as a forum post asserting the internet died in 2016 and everything since is bots. The strong version is unfalsifiable. The weak version is increasingly supported by traffic measurement.
