CROP CIRCLES

"agriglyphs" ยท the Wiltshire formations ยท subject of "cereology"
ACTIVE SINCELate 1970s, southern England; confessed origin 1976
EPICENTERWiltshire โ€” the Avebury/Stonehenge corridor
KEY EVENTDoug Bower and Dave Chorley confess and demonstrate, September 1991
STATUSDebunked. Method demonstrated; practitioners active.

THE CLAIM

Geometric formations appearing overnight in cereal fields โ€” overwhelmingly in southern England โ€” are too large, too precise, and too anatomically strange (bent-not-broken stems, elongated nodes) to be human work. Candidate authors have included UFOs, plasma vortices, earth energies, and intelligences attempting contact via wheat.

WHAT IS KNOWN

In September 1991, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley โ€” two Southampton-area men then in their sixties โ€” told the press they had been making crop circles since 1976, inspired by reports of a 1966 "saucer nest" in Tully, Australia, and by a shared enthusiasm for pranking UFO watchers. Their toolkit: a wooden plank on a loop of rope, string for the geometry, and a sighting device rigged to a baseball cap for walking straight lines in the dark. They demonstrated the method for journalists, and a formation they made was pronounced authentic by a leading cereologist before the confession was revealed โ€” a controlled test the field did not pass.

Bower and Chorley could not have made every formation, and did not claim to; that is the point. They founded a folk art, and others took it up. Teams of "circlemakers" have operated openly for decades, producing formations of escalating complexity โ€” including commissioned work for advertisers โ€” using the same flatten-and-survey methods. The famous late-period formations (multi-hundred-circle fractals, the 1996 Julia-set pattern near Stonehenge) date from the era of open, competitive human circlemaking, which is what an arms race between artists looks like from the air.

The geographic pattern is equally instructive: the phenomenon concentrates in Avebury-adjacent Wiltshire, an area rich in prehistoric monuments, mystically inclined tourists, and โ€” not coincidentally โ€” media coverage and summer visitor income. Circles appear where circle audiences are.

EVIDENCE FOR

  • Formations are genuinely large, precise, and often executed in a single short summer night โ€” an impressive logistical feat, honestly stated.
  • Claims of anomalous plant changes โ€” elongated growth nodes, "expulsion cavities" โ€” published by W. C. Levengood and associates in the 1990s.
  • Eyewitness reports of lights over fields, of the quality typical of nighttime lights generally.

EVIDENCE AGAINST

  • A confession with a demonstration โ€” the gold standard. Bower and Chorley showed the method producing the product, including features (swirled lays, standing centers) said to be beyond human means.
  • Node elongation does not require mystery physics: flattened stems respond to light and gravity by continuing to grow and bending upward (phototropism and gravitropism), and stems lying in a summer field experience sun and moisture. The anomaly claims lacked blinded controls and independent replication.
  • Human teams demonstrably produce formations of the highest observed complexity, on camera, on commission. No formation exists that circlemakers class as beyond technique.
  • Complexity tracks human fashion over time โ€” simple circles, then pictograms, then fractals โ€” rather than any natural or extraterrestrial constant.

ASSESSMENT

Crop circles are the rare case where the culprits stood in the field, holding the plank, and a portion of the audience concluded the plank was a cover story. The Office rules the phenomenon an authenticated school of anonymous land art โ€” one of Britain's finer contributions to the genre โ€” and notes that "made by people" and "remarkable" are compatible findings. The wheat was harmed, but only the wheat.
