THE CLAIM

Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone: some combination of the CIA, the Mafia, Cuba, the Soviets, or domestic hardliners conspired to kill President Kennedy, and the government has concealed it ever since.

WHAT IS KNOWN

The Warren Commission concluded in 1964 that Lee Harvey Oswald, firing from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository, killed the President alone. The physical case remains formidable: the rifle recovered there was mail-ordered by Oswald under an alias and bore his palm print; he worked in the building; he fled, shot Dallas police officer J. D. Tippit before multiple witnesses, and had attempted to assassinate General Edwin Walker with the same rifle months earlier. Two days after the assassination, Oswald was himself murdered on live television by nightclub owner Jack Ruby โ€” the single fact that has done the most, ever since, to make the official story feel unfinished.

In 1979 the House Select Committee on Assassinations agreed Oswald fired the shots that killed Kennedy but concluded a conspiracy was "probable" โ€” resting chiefly on an acoustic analysis of a police Dictabelt recording said to capture a fourth shot. A National Academy of Sciences panel re-examined the recording in 1982 and found the analysis unreliable โ€” crosstalk on the belt indicates the relevant sounds were recorded about a minute after the shooting. The HSCA's conspiracy finding thus stands on evidence its own successors rejected, while the committee itself found no involvement by the Soviet or Cuban governments, and none by the CIA, FBI, or organized crime as organizations.

The JFK Records Act has since pushed millions of pages into the open, with large releases in 2017โ€“2018, 2021โ€“2023, and 2025. They have illuminated real institutional bad behavior โ€” notably how much the CIA knew about Oswald's pre-assassination visit to Mexico City and how both CIA and FBI shaded their files to hide their own fumbles from the Warren Commission โ€” without producing evidence of a plot. Gallup polling has found majorities of Americans believing in a conspiracy in nearly every survey for six decades.

EVIDENCE FOR (A CONSPIRACY)

  • An official body of Congress โ€” the HSCA โ€” formally concluded "probable conspiracy," even if its key exhibit later failed review.
  • Documented agency concealment: the CIA and FBI demonstrably withheld and massaged Oswald-related information, which is why suspicion has never priced to zero.
  • Genuinely suggestive context: Oswald's defection to the USSR, his Mexico City contacts with the Soviet and Cuban missions, and Ruby's silencing of the one man who could explain himself.

EVIDENCE AGAINST

  • The physical evidence against Oswald โ€” rifle, prints, ballistics, flight, the Tippit murder, the Walker attempt โ€” is strong and has survived six decades of hostile review.
  • The acoustic fourth-shot finding, the sole official basis for "conspiracy," was discredited by the National Academy of Sciences in 1982.
  • Every named plot โ€” Mafia, CIA, Castro, LBJ โ€” remains an unproven hypothesis; sixty years of releases, deathbed confessions, and subpoenas have produced no confederate, no payment, and no order.

ASSESSMENT

The stamp reads CONTESTED because the United States government contested itself: two official investigations, two verdicts. The bureau's own read is narrower and should be stated plainly โ€” the evidence that Oswald fired the shots is about as strong as historical cases get, and no conspiracy behind him has ever been demonstrated, by anyone, despite the most scrutinized evidentiary record in American history. What the files do prove is that agencies lied to protect their reputations, and that cover-up-shaped behavior around an event is not the same as a cover-up of the event. What would change the stamp: a corroborated confederate or documented tasking. Sixty-plus years in, the drawer for that exhibit is still empty.
