THE CLAIM
That the most famous aviator of her age vanished within radio range of a ship waiting to guide her in, and that nearly ninety years of searching โ naval, private, forensic, and sonar โ has yet to produce one confirmed piece of her aircraft.
WHAT IS KNOWN
Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan left Lae, New Guinea, on July 2, 1937, aiming for Howland Island โ a speck less than two miles long โ on the second-to-last ocean crossing of an equatorial round-the-world flight. The Coast Guard cutter Itasca, stationed at Howland, received her transmissions at increasing strength through the morning: she reported "we must be on you but cannot see you... gas is running low," and finally that she was running on a line of position 157/337. Two-way contact was never properly established โ a tangle of mismatched frequencies, schedules, and equipment โ and after that last transmission, nothing.
The Navy and Coast Guard mounted what was then the largest search in history, including aircraft from the carrier Lexington and the battleship Colorado, covering thousands of square miles of ocean and the islands to the southeast. They found nothing. The official conclusion โ the aircraft exhausted its fuel and ditched at sea near Howland โ has remained the U.S. government's position and the sober consensus ever since.
The alternatives have kept the file thick. In 1940 a British colonial officer on Gardner Island (now Nikumaroro, roughly 350 nautical miles southeast on Earhart's stated line) found a partial human skeleton and a sextant box; a physician, D. W. Hoodless, measured the bones and judged them male. The bones were subsequently lost. In 2018 anthropologist Richard Jantz re-analyzed Hoodless's recorded measurements and concluded they were more similar to Earhart than to 99 percent of a modern reference sample โ a striking result, though one derived from numbers on paper rather than bone. In January 2024 the firm Deep Sea Vision published a sonar image of an aircraft-shaped anomaly on the seabed about 100 miles from Howland; a follow-up survey later that year showed it to be a rock formation.
LEADING THEORIES
- Crash and sink. The leading hypothesis: fuel exhaustion near Howland and a ditching in deep water. It fits the radio record and the fuel math; the wreck would lie in some of the deepest, least-mapped ocean on Earth, which is why repeated sonar expeditions keep coming home empty.
- The Nikumaroro castaway. TIGHAR's long-running hypothesis: Earhart flew the 157/337 line to Gardner Island, landed on the reef, and died a castaway. The 1940 bones, the Jantz re-analysis, and assorted period artifacts are suggestive; nothing recovered from the island has been conclusively tied to Earhart or the Electra.
- Japanese capture. The persistent claim that the pair came down in the Marshall Islands and died in Japanese custody has never produced a supporting document, and its best-known exhibit โ a photograph promoted by a 2017 television special โ was found in a Japanese archive publication dated 1935, two years before the flight.
- She will be found. Deep-ocean search technology now locates lost aircraft as a commercial service. The Electra is a 38-foot airframe in an area the size of a U.S. state; the question is funding and patience, not physics.
ASSESSMENT
The dull theory is almost certainly the true one, and the OSA notes how much cultural work has gone into avoiding it. The radio logs describe an aircraft close, low on fuel, and unable to find a two-mile island in morning glare โ a navigation tragedy, not an abduction. Nikumaroro remains the one alternative a careful analyst can hold without embarrassment. The file stays open until someone photographs an Electra on the seabed, and one day someone will.
