THE CLAIM
Something exploded over remote Siberia in 1908 with the force of a large thermonuclear weapon, flattening a forest the size of a metropolis โ and, per a century of speculation, the culprit was anything from a comet to antimatter, a wandering black hole, or Nikola Tesla's tower.
WHAT IS KNOWN
On the morning of June 30, 1908, a fireball crossed the sky above the Podkamennaya Tunguska River and detonated in the atmosphere. The blast leveled roughly 2,000 square kilometers of taiga โ on the order of 80 million trees, felled in a radial, butterfly-shaped pattern. Witnesses dozens of kilometers away were knocked off their feet; the pressure wave registered on barographs as far away as Britain, seismographs recorded the shock across Eurasia, and for several nights the skies over Europe glowed bright enough to read by. The region was so sparsely populated that reported human deaths number no more than a handful.
Science arrived late but thoroughly. The Soviet mineralogist Leonid Kulik reached the blast zone in 1927 expecting to mine a giant iron meteorite. Instead he found the signature that defines the case: an epicenter of scorched trees still standing upright, stripped like telegraph poles, ringed by outward-felled forest โ and no crater. Later expeditions recovered microscopic spherules consistent with extraterrestrial material, but never a body.
The modern consensus resolves the paradox: a stony asteroid or comet fragment, plausibly some tens of meters across, slammed into the atmosphere and disintegrated in an airburst several kilometers up, delivering energy estimated in the range of a few to tens of megatons โ hence the devastation, and hence no crater. The 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor, a much smaller rock that burst over a Russian city and injured about 1,500 people (mostly by broken glass), provided a live-fire demonstration of the same mechanism.
EVIDENCE FOR (THE AIRBURST CONSENSUS)
- The tree-fall pattern, standing "telegraph pole" epicenter, and absence of a crater โ all reproduced by airburst modeling.
- Global barographic and seismic records fixing the event's time and scale.
- Chelyabinsk 2013: the same physics observed on camera, at 1/1000th the scale.
EVIDENCE AGAINST (THE EXOTIC THEORIES)
- Antimatter (proposed 1965) and a primordial black hole (proposed 1973) predict signatures โ radiation products, an exit event on the far side of the planet โ that were never found.
- The Tesla story has no documentary basis at all: nothing connects Wardenclyffe, which had effectively ceased operation years earlier, to Siberia, and no mechanism has ever been shown by which it could level a forest on another continent.
- The claim that Lake Cheko is the impact crater is disputed; Russian sediment studies indicate the lake predates 1908.
ASSESSMENT
The bureau keeps this file as a control specimen: a genuine, spectacular anomaly that stayed mysterious exactly as long as nobody could get there, and yielded โ slowly, undramatically โ to fieldwork and physics. No agency hid anything; the wilderness did. Tunguska's real legacy is not paranormal but actuarial: it is the reason planetary-defense programs catalogue near-Earth objects, since the same event over a city would be a catastrophe. A solved case, stamped CONFIRMED for the boring, correct answer. What would reopen it: recovered fragments inconsistent with an asteroid or comet. A century of searching has produced none.
