THE CLAIM
In towns scattered across the world, a small minority of residents hear a constant low-frequency hum that no one else can hear and no microphone can reliably capture โ variously blamed on secret military installations, gas pipelines, submarine communications, and the planet itself.
WHAT IS KNOWN
The reports are consistent to a degree that rules out simple invention. Hearers โ surveys in affected areas put them at around two percent of the population โ describe the same thing in the same words: a low drone like a truck idling a block away, more audible indoors than out, worse at night, impossible to escape with earplugs, and undetected by family members in the same room. The Bristol Hum drew national attention in the UK in the 1970s. In the early 1990s, complaints around Taos, New Mexico prompted a congressionally requested investigation by scientists from several institutions, who interviewed hearers and swept the area with instruments. They found genuine, distressed, otherwise-normal people โ and no acoustic or electromagnetic source. The distress is not in question: hearers report insomnia, headaches, and in chronic cases real deterioration in quality of life.
Some Hums, however, have been caught. The Windsor Hum, which rattled the Ontario city across the river from Detroit in the 2010s, was investigated by Canadian authorities and researchers; the evidence pointed across the border to heavy industry on Zug Island, Michigan โ and reports subsided when blast-furnace operations there went idle around 2020. Other local investigations have variously implicated factories, compressors, and pumping stations. The file therefore splits: a solved category of genuine environmental low-frequency noise, and an unsolved remainder in which instruments find nothing.
CANDIDATE EXPLANATIONS
- External, industrial. Proven in specific cases (Windsor). Low-frequency sound propagates far, penetrates walls, and is maddeningly hard to localize by ear โ a good match for the phenomenology where a source exists.
- Internal generation. For the unsolved remainder: spontaneous otoacoustic emissions, low-frequency tinnitus-like percepts, or heightened sensitivity to internal body sounds. Explains why microphones hear nothing, why earplugs don't help, and why only some people are affected.
- Exotic external sources. Submarine-communication transmitters, gas pipelines, microseisms. Occasionally floated, never substantiated for any surveyed Hum, and hard to square with the 2% selectivity.
ASSESSMENT
Unverified โ not because the hearers are doubted, but because "the Hum" is almost certainly not one thing. The evidence supports a mixed verdict: some Hums are ordinary industrial noise wearing a mask, and the rest look increasingly like a percept generated between the ear and the brain, real to the sufferer and invisible to the microphone because there is nothing outside the skull to record. What would settle a given case is what settled Windsor: correlation with a source that can be switched off. A single global cause would require evidence no investigation has produced. In the meantime the bureau's sympathy is with the two percent, who did not ask to be the only ones who can hear the engine.
